From the early beginnings, art has been a language which does not know anything about borders nor obstacles. Art does not need a go-between. It always finds a path to people and their souls.
The Maribor Conservatory of Music and Ballet was established seven decades ago.
Only a few days after the end of WW II, the first music lessons at the primary and secondary level took place at Državna glasbena šola, the predecessor of today’s Conservatory. So the Conservatory became the first music school founded after WWII.
From difficult after war beginnings, the Conservatory, which over the years changed many names, has grown into one of the largest music schools in Slovenia. Numerous pupils and students, coming from different Slovene municipalities, can choose today from the widest selection of education programmes.
Thousands of children have been taught the basics of music, how to play an instrument, how to sing and from the year 1977 how to dance and command their bodies.
Those students who decided that music / dance would become their professions received solid foundations and a lot of knowledge needed for their further education. Many of them became renown musicians, ballet dancers, heads of music institutions or successful teachers. We are extremely proud and flattered when they say where they made their first steps into the world of music and dance.
Of no lesser importance to us are those students who decided not to follow their careers in art, but became amateur musicians and our keen supporters.
A lot of our teachers and students have been awarded many awards and prizes at home and abroad, many of them won the Prešeren Award for the highest achievements in culture.
Vision statement
Our goal is to maintain and reinforce our role of the central music and educational establishment in the north eastern Slovenia and to preserve the respectability of the establishment with such a long and rich tradition.
Furthermore, we regularly collaborate with Maribor’s leading music and dance venues on a range of projects and will continue to do so.
In the pursuit of our vision and mission statements, we strive for perfection, development and persistence.
We want to provide our pupils and students with outstanding music and dance training and education, raise them into thinking individuals and equip them for their future studies and careers.
Our work is geared towards future, Europe and the world since music and dance are not restricted by any language barriers nor obstacles of any other kind.
Mission statement
The conservatory offers music and dance education from pre-school to the school-leaving exam at the secondary level. Our pupils and students learn how to perform, cooperate, they develop their creativity, social skills, their personal and artistic expression, initiative and solidarity. Also, they are taught to appreciate and respect our national heritage and cultural diversity.
